Doors of the nature reserve of collserola Barcelona

[Mention. Public Competition, Barcelona, 2012]

Project to revive and develop the area of Adhamiya, Baghdad

First Prize of the International Competition, 05.2012

<img width="2443" height="2480" width_o="2443" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/970d53ee57a86fc1e2dd75d2afb4ad979b8384257261fdaf5acf853f2422c874/02.Adhamiya_urban2.jpeg" data-mid="108121475" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/970d53ee57a86fc1e2dd75d2afb4ad979b8384257261fdaf5acf853f2422c874/02.Adhamiya_urban2.jpeg" />

Erbil Citadel Revitalization, Irak&nbsp;

2nd prize of the restricted International Competition, 2011

The Citadel of Erbil has two exceptional qualities that in unison convert it into an extraordinary place: the exceptional conservation of the archaeological substrate, and the fact that the Citadel is still inhabited and therefore alive. From our point of view, life and architecture are consubstantial, but rarely do they coexist in their finest expression. Academic architecture tends to exclude life, and life usually disdains the order and higher beauty of architecture. When both life and architecture live together in harmony and mutual respect, the right kind of civilisation flourishes. That is why we consider that all of our proposed actions should respond to the dual requirements of life and architecture.

Criteria for Architectural Intervention

With regard to the criteria for architectural intervention, our proposals should form a model for any future intervention in the rest of the Citadel, adapting these criteria as a blueprint, appropriately&nbsp; scaled both to the general revitalisation of the Citadel, as well as to the economic and social characteristics of the interested parties.

We propose selective rehabilitation that will progressively substitute the "shack construction", whose appalling material quality, inexistent utility or memory precludes any justifiable conservation, combined with the rehabilitation and consolidation of the 335 catalogued buildings.

The construction or reconstruction strategy that we propose becomes more or less rigid, depending on the particular level of conservation of the buildings, as well as the density and quality of the existing buildings. Our priorities are focussed on the preservation and the restoration of the quality of the original public spaces in the Citadel; organic, friendly and at a human scale.In order to achieve this, our project implies respect for the existing fabric, designed to guarantee&nbsp; continuity with the prevalent construction techniques within the Citadel, built mainly of brick, which is occasionally rendered, and in some exceptional cases, of stone. Having stated this clear aim regarding the recuperation of the morphology of the currently disfigured&nbsp; public spaces and of the preservation and consolidation of the substratum upon which we intend to operate, we will now explain with more precision what we understand to be the correct approach in order to be respectful with both the past and by extension with the present.

UReborn Mosul Plan for Urban conservation and Development, Irak&nbsp;

Restricted International Competition, 2012

Mosul, 396 km north of Baghdad, is Iraq's 2nd largest city, a center for the tourist resorts of northern Iraq, and the north's major center for trade, industry and communications, with approximately 570,000 inhabitants. Situated in the northwestern part of the country, on the west bank of Tigris, and close to the ruined Assyrian city of Nineveh. Mosul is called Um Al-Rabi'ain (The City of Two Springs), because autumn and spring are very much alike there. It is also named Al-Faiha (The Paradise), Al-Khadhra (The Green), and Al-Hadba (The Humped), and sometimes described as the Pearl of the North.

Mosul: a model for the future revitalization of Irak Old Cities. Presentation of our methodology for planning and implementation named Reborn Mosul&nbsp; to make Mousel a new model of success that can compete in beauty, economic vitality and quality of life with cities like Aleppo, Granada, Cordoba, Sevilla and become a reference in which to watch the rest of Iraqi cities in the process of renewal.

The city itself due to its quality&nbsp;and uniqueness&nbsp;can generate the&nbsp;resources to ensure&nbsp;a great&nbsp;economic and social welfare&nbsp;and a huge&nbsp;cultural&nbsp;wealth&nbsp;that encourages knowledge sharing.

Xu Gong Island Masterplan, Shangai, 2013

[Urban Planning]&nbsp;

The drafting of the Master Plan of the island of Xu Gong is conditioned by a previous project which has already established some areas of occupation. The previous proposal proposed a series of slopes in the different areas ranging climbing the different hillsides. The rock that has been extracted from these clearings has been stockpiling as material for the construction of the dock of the Marina.Xu-Gong Island has an area of approximately 8 hectares, is a pristine island with its original morphology modified due to the formation of the slopes set out in the first MP. One of the first assumptions that are taken into account when making a new approach is to try to maintain the natural character of the island to the fullest, with the new building trying to recover the original morphology.

An essential issue for the future operation of the island is the rehabilitation of the lagoon at the centre of all activities and functions that will be generated on the island.

This requires a conditioning of the current state of the lagoon, is expected bottom cleaning of existing sludge, natural treatment water purification and cleaning, replanting of aquatic vegetation and the creation of a beach on the west end. All these operations are performed to enable all the bathroom and leisure activities provided. As anticipated activities swimming areas, canoeing, sailing, water games, diving etc.

According to the areas we provide different topologies of building, they all try to minimize the most the visual impact of the edificatory volumes. The island is divided into four sectors:

1. South Lagoon Sector
In this sector there are a number of slopes already made, from our point of view are they totally disproportionate for the type of building that is expected in the area. Therefore we intend to propose a visual minorization of these slopes, providing different levels,&nbsp; so the visual impact of the bank face it is not seen in all its dimension. At the same time the building relates to the base of the slopes, we maintain the roof plane at the same level the posterior slope, in this way the volumetry is much more integrated. Also plays a very important role landscaping and vegetation, it would restore the perception of a “natural” landscape. &nbsp;

There are different types of planned housing, ranging from 300 m2 up to 450 m2. The area is low-medium density, family houses with large gardens and green areas with privacy.

2. Central Sector
In the central sector is where a higher density is expected, is the area with more square meters of construction and will house most of the shopping and leisure activities on the island. This is the area where there is more flat ground surface and this allows us to create a central space where the whole edification revolves around this esplanade facing the lagoon, the seafront promenade is the virtual limit of this area, creating an horizon line before the beach.

The lagoon is a natural element, essential to generate all leisure activities around, so it is expected a continuous cleaning of the water, the introduction of lake vegetation, the introduction of different elements of play and leisure as swimming pools, playgrounds, rest areas, canoes etc.

To decrease the impact of the building is necessary to foresee a series of buildings that will lean on the side to accompany the existing topography vegetation, we also use green roofs to minimize the visual impact of the whole volume.

Somehow, these buildings recall the way to deal with slopes in traditional rice fields.

The first level would be located where the commercial area and the different access to hotels and housing of the upper floors are. In the central esplanade we provide two zones, one more public with a park program and a second more private where there would be a large pool for guests of the hotels in this area.

The second and third level would be hotels, apartments and housing.

3. South Sector
This sector has two distinct areas, a first that collect all the edificatory front of the seafront and a second one linked to the topography and which we also expect to slope the building.

The front building is proposing a blurring of its skyline, the undulating deck profile enables the possibility of a large longitudinal building, giving the impression that it is not a single building but can be understood as a succession of different buildings.

In the bass of this longitudinal building is proposed all commercial, the intention is that it fills the space intermittently, leaving permeability spaces to the rear space and creating protected areas for the terraces. This decomposition of the base, the feeling of buoyancy, enables to subtract edificatory “weight” giving lightness to the building.

Access to housing and hotels in this building are planned by the back.

The upper buildings are divided into three levels. A first level where the art deposit is located&nbsp; and another two where the Health Care Centre is located.

These two levels are related to the slope in a similar manner to the central area, roof gardens with terraced buildings.

4. North Sector
In the northern sector there has been no alteration of the original terrain. Therefore we believe it is appropriate not to change the existing topography and all the elements that are expected in this area, such as access walkways and cottages are arranged so that they do not alter the existing terrain. Foundations of low-impact and lightweight surface structures are provided in these edifications. In this area&nbsp; all buildings are raised in wood. This type of construction is reminiscent of the traditional houses in Chinese water areas.

Sawa Lake
Sustainable and integrated proposal for tourist development,

Iraq, 2014

&nbsp;

We understand that this project is beyond the scope of strictly business related to tourism development. It is a project of social interest. Under current conditions of Iraq, projects that aim to provide spaces for leisure and relaxation to people and families should be considered social projects.

The two basic objectives of this project will be:
1. Ensure the habitability, the comfort and well-being in these new leisure spaces.
2. Preserve the ecological balance of the fragile and beautiful environmental surroundings.

In this project we will have to deal with the most important and controverse concepts of the architecture: liveability, durability or reversibility. The human footprint, the relation that the humans has to establish with nature in owr time, or wich is the contemporary and the intemporary cultural context of the possible inhabitants of this place. As always, the best practices from the past can give us key clues to project our vision to future.

Area of interventionAs first thing it will be important to define and delimit with the authorities the area of development in Sawa Lake, as well as restrictions to the intervention according to the distance to the lake. This in order to ensure the two main objectives of this project. We propose to establish a protection distance line from the lake, and a wall, to protect us from the desert.The enclosing wallIn an arid context like we are in Sawa lake surroundings, the enclosing wall is for us a key element for defining a clear boundary and allows us to create a complete interior Universe, protecting ourselves and our lives from an aggressive exterior like it is the desert. After this first operation of delimitation of the protected space, we will design an introverted additive structure, overcoming the dichotomy between geometry and organic that is stated in Islamic architecture.&nbsp;

Housing Unit
The single house the basic unit on which the urban fabric of this new city is defined. The geometry of the modular system has the capacity to be combined. This versatility provides complexity and richness to the domestic space as well as to the urban space. This human and variable urban scale is a necessary condition for a good life, even more so in a place of rest, relaxation and recreation.

The combination of these equipped avenues with randomly organized housing units generates a neighbourhood of winding paths, where small and changing spaces transports us to complex and varied universe. The experience of space is rich and changing. The walks are filled with subtle differences. The houses, that are in fact very similar, will be perceived as unique and special.The house is a courtyard house. The courtyard house is the most timeless, adaptable and versatile model. Its enormous efficiency has made it an extended model from Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, The Islamic Empire, Spain and from there to Latin America. The validity, efficiency, beauty and sustainability of this housing model is unquestionable to us.
We will study the uses of those spaces. We will try to recover the specific ways of using the space in the Iraqi social and cultural tradition. Only then can we ensure the welfare in these areas for relaxing and meeting.
We understand and share this conception of the interior space where the walls do not stop the vision. This vision through filters helps transport the imagination to an infinite universe. The lattices that filter the light and veil the image, the mosaics with their geometrical and mathematical evocations of the cosmos, are crucial element to build this magical interior world. In this interior, a person is not confined. A person in this interior has the capacity, through architecture, to mentally travel to an infinite, complex and poetic world. The best contemporary design, supported by the latest technology allows us to recreate these atmospheres and spatial sensations of welfare and happiness.

Developing the Banks of Tigris River in Baghdad, Iraq, 2014

The open areas, parks, walking green areas, water bodies and entertainment events are considered to be an essential part of the activities of modern cities. There is a need to continue providing such places in several areas of the city, so that they can be easily accessible and reachable, as well as its capability to cover the needs of the population. It is no secret that these places represent an essential part of the urban land use. Everyone knows that one of the main problems that Baghdad faces nowadays is the receding greenery and entertainment events throughout the city, as well as the neglection of the Tigris

River and not taking advantage of it to create a balanced urban environment. The river could play a key role at this level, because it represents one of the most prominent environmental landmarks in the city of Baghdad.

We firmly believe that project for developing the Tigris banks of the Tigris river, is a challenge and an opportunity to give back to the river its importance in the articulation and creation of urban structures in Iraq. This project could be understood as a pilot project, that will show different ways for developing the banks of the river, connected with the city - cities and with the nature and landscape. As a main concept to link all the actions of &lt;&lt; the project for developing of the banks of the Tigris river &gt;&gt;, we are going to develop a leisure- cultural - religious facilities plan that will relate and make interactive the tigris to baghdad and to baghdadis.

<img width="500" height="359" width_o="500" height_o="359" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/0ea604207ab676053dcf879234a8cdae871b823a2e894883a02753551c6df2ce/BAGHDAD1.jpg" data-mid="112050184" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/500/i/0ea604207ab676053dcf879234a8cdae871b823a2e894883a02753551c6df2ce/BAGHDAD1.jpg" />

The study area includes the banks of the Tigris River on the sides of Karkh and Rusafa and within the following areas:

• The path of the river within the boundaries of the Municipality of Baghdad

• The path of the river for a distance of 10 km before entering the limits of the Municipality of Baghdad

• The path of the river for a distance of 10 km after leaving the limits of the Municipality of Baghdad.

We are aware of some difficult characteristics of the study area:

• Existence of many constructions on the river.

• Lack of open spaces on the banks of the river, which reduces the opportunities to take advantage of the river for recreational purposes.

• Lack of a clear plan from the state to expropriate the banks of the river, add to this, that a large proportion of the property overlooking the banks of the river back belongs to the private sector.

• Existence of a great diversity of land uses that overlooks the river.

• Possibility of conflict between development plans of the banks of the river with the nature of the land uses.

Trenčin, City of Design, Slovakia
Finalist Project of the International Open Competition, 2014

The main objective of this project was to transform Trencin into a new, autonomous and sustainable city.

To do this, it was proposed to adopt a comprehensive approach to the proposal that goes beyond urban design, also encompassing socio-economic and cultural issues. This revitalization program was not considered abstract, since it had to be precisely installed in the morphological structure of the city, interrelated with the existing social framework.

The project included the following:

1. Main concept (spatial and conceptual): Trčncin Target Image

2. Strategic Plan / Urban Design: Definition of the physical intervention and uses

Taking into account the peculiarities of Trčncin, the specific objectives of the proposal are:

A. Serve as a guide for the creation of a future recognizable and encouraging image of the city of Trencin.

B. Help in the identification and definition of the approach to mixed use, providing a vision of Trencin as a city with its own and recognizable identity, and also as a destination city.

C. Provide a high environmental and landscape quality that manages to make the city a place to invest and that consequently generates substantial benefits for local residents.

Key values provided by the project:

- Identify and define an appropriate mixed-use approach for Trencin, based on reflecting the diversity of the city's cultural, social, economic, and natural resources.

- Generate an attractive, modern, sustainable and physical transformation proposal for Trencin, giving it life but maintaining the connection with its identity.

- Propose and assign models and programs that contribute to the social, cultural and economic revitalization of the city, offering a varied and balanced proposal for an equally diverse range of market groups

Punta Canoas. Excellence Village, Colombia, 2015

The land where the urban Master Plan project "The Golden Age - Village d'Excellence", includes the construction of 550 houses. A preliminarily observing of the terrain and the topography of the area permit to recognize clear morphological differences from one area to another. These differences between areas allow us to propose different types of architecture in the buildings, which are adapted to the natural terrain, its topography and also rescues the natural landscape of the land.

This project is developed in a time of radical transformation, to achieve excellence, and to respond to the needs and wishes of people in our time. A concept of happiness linked to a close and respectful relationship with nature after understanding what is essential in life. The good weather of the Caribbean, the Cultural offer of Cartagena, the setting of protected nature, the quality of the architecture, the implementation of dynamic cultural programs, health and fitness, make this place a desirable destination.

We have designed different types of housing, with variation in m2 building.

Colonial Patio – Houses:&nbsp;25 units

The reference for this kind of Village will be the Spanish settlements in the Caribbean and Mexico. The Spanish Colonial style is characterized by the classical planning system, that allows to create the structure to occupying an empty plot area. Along the two main perpendicular axis the public functions are located. From these axis derives a secondary net, where the residential units (houses yard) take place.

The house, called “board house”, typically has two-story, the houses included cooling porches to accommodate the Caribbean climate. In further architectural development of the project, we propose to develop this architectural type - COLONIAL-PATIO VILLAGE - into a contemporary architectural linguistic and spatial code.

Terrace Houses: 150 units

This model starts from the conditioning of the natural topography in order to be able to cultivate the land and inhabit.

The terraced houses fit the gap with the minimum constructive effort. The streets follow the topographical lines and the perpendicular stairs climbing in between the house allow to reach the top.

In further architectural development of the project, we propose to develop this architectural type - Terrace Houses – into a contemporary architectural linguistic and spatial code.

Isolated Houses in the Forest: 30 units.

This model connects with these idyllic permanent dream of humans to “go back to nature” the first home.

“The hut in the forest” recovering the primitive and pure way of living with nature. Houses that go into the forest and plant blend in with the environment. Living organisms, tree houses, which grow as living beings and allow the lives settle and pose in them.

In further architectural development of the project, we propose to develop this architectural type - Isolated Houses in the Forest&nbsp; - into a contemporary architectural linguistic and spatial code.

Seafront Houses: 30 units

This model is based on the desire of “looking forward to the sea”, to the horizont. The human body exposed to the sun and to the wind. Relax and contemplation.

In further architectural development of the project, we propose to develop this architectural type - Isolated Seafront Houses - into a contemporary architectural linguistic and spatial code.

Garden Houses: 150 units

Construction suburban street in which governs the subdivision based on perpendicular plots. The relative position of the houses, with similar volumetric but a variable formal response, resulting in a front garden and a different dimension after conferring dynamism and variety to urban - space garden city. This typology is supporting a more natural relationship with sport, since it is part of their tradition and idiosyncrasy, and manages to integrate these programs into the landscaping project.

In further architectural development of the project, we propose to develop this architectural type - Garden Houses – into a contemporary architectural linguistic and spatial code.

Chinese Courtyard Houses:&nbsp;150 units

The inspiration for this area comes from the aesthetic derived from Taoism, Zen Buddhism.
The idea is that a space’s true beauty is the empty space within a roof and walls.“Aesthetic ideal of Emptyness”, believing that the mood should be captured in the imagination, and not so heavily dictaded by what is physically present. In the middle of this empty space the gardens. Space for peace and meditation.

In further architectural development of the project, we propose to develop this architectural type- Chinese Courtyard Houses - into a contemporary architectural linguistic and spatial code.

Signorili Villas: 15 units

These will be one of the more expensive and exclusive areas.
The plots are big and the relation with the Marina privileged. The access to that area is quite restricted and they have their own club and services. They have direct access from the see and private access to the houses from the marina.

In further architectural development of the project, we propose to develop this architectural type- Signorili Villas – into a contemporary architectural linguistic and spatial code.
